An elastography, also known as liver elastography, is a type of imaging test that checks the liver for fibrosis.

Fibrosis is a condition that reduces blood flow to and inside the liver. This causes the buildup of scar tissue. Left untreated, fibrosis can lead to serious problems in the liver.

The risks

The are no risks to Fibroscan, with the exception of diagnostic error, which is very rare.

The preparation

You should not eat or drink anything 4 hours before the test.

The test

Fibroscan takes about 15 minutes to complete, and it is not painful. Some gel will be placed on your skin, between your ribs on your right side. A small probe will then be gently moved across your skin to analyze whether there is any fibrosis in your liver.
